I went to Walmart & Lowe's and bought DAP fast'n final lightweight spackling, one step, no cracking, no sanding and fast drying.   I also bought different sized spackle knives.  I bought the kind that had no smell and easy to work with.  Fill in the whole and use the spackle knife to make it smooth into the wall.  You might try doing this to small holes to get the feel of it.  It's all in the wrist movement.
