The best way is to get rid of the source of the flies (usually fruit).  Find and elimiate the source and the flies should leave the area.

If you buy bananas.............you have to rinse them in cold water to get any eggs on the fruit........seperate the fingers and use netting..............I hate fruit flies........I bought a bell & howell plug in room Walmart $18.00 plus tax.....you get 4.......no flies or ants.......since last July 2013.  They like to get on the screens, so I vac them often.
