The wall needs to be washed, any wholes filled and then have to be smooth............clean up any dust with vacuum cleaner.  Lighter colors make the room look bigger.  Take you time selecting a color.  You can bring some samples home and see which colors match for your rugs or furniture in the room.  You need special tape that will not leave marks, several sheets of plastic to cover the floors & furniture.......a paint roller & sleeve, a paint tray and I have some odds & ends of different style paint brushes and rollers.  They have a paint lid that you can buy with a hole in it with a cap so once you stir the paint you can pour as much as you need.  Start in one corner and use your pain brush to fill it in and then use the roller.  You can cut the ceiling in or use tha special tape to tape it tight and paint right to the tape.  Depending on what color is on your wall now, you might need a sub coat if it is too dark.
